Comparison shopping, gift sites had huge December traffic surge

NEW YORK, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Traffic to comparison shopping and gift sites surged in December as holiday shoppers flocked to e-commerce sites, according to a report released on Wednesday.

Comparison shopping sites that experienced huge growth rates between November and December included Giftcertificates.com, up 160.9 percent; mySimon.com, 146.2 percent; Christmas.com, 118.9 percent; Flooz.com, 113.3 percent; Ecost.com, 109.1 percent; and Redenvelope.com, 86.8 percent; said Nielsen/NetRatings, the Internet measurement service from Nielsen Media Research (NYSE:NMR - news) and NetRatings Inc. (NasdaqNM:NTRT - news)

Other E-commerce sites that had dramatic increases in traffic during this period included Artistdirect.com, 284.4 percent; Cyberrebate.com, 135.3 percent; 800.com, 129.7 percent; Outpost.com, 97.6 percent; and Shopping.com, 95.6 percent.

"The 1999 holiday season saw the emergence of the importance of commerce enablers as a significant driver to all sectors of e-commerce, " said Allen Weiner, vice president of Analytical Services for NetRatings. "Enablers, such as comparison sites and focused gift-giving services, provide Web consumers with important information to facilitate decisions, which lead to transactions. Commerce enablers are bound to be one of the Web's hottest sectors this year."

Among news and information sites, Marketswatch.com had the most growth, with a 38.9 percent rise in unique visitors from November, the report said. Also increasing their traffic in the category were Weather.com, 24.3 percent; ZDNet.com, 12.4 percent; and Cnet.com, 10.4 percent.

Sites experiencing the highest increases in unique audience were: About.com, 62.8 percent; Fortune City, 55.9 percent; and American Greetings, 19.0 percent.
